NEW: CISM Refresher – Practice Scenarios

Each of these three NEW Remote Learning Programs offer a live faculty-led 3 hour session focusing on a specific skill set. Work on competence with a specific intervention through scenario-based training exercises. Each 3-hour session will provide specific and direct feedback, troubleshooting, and include challenges of these interventions in light of COVID-19. 

Using the right technique at the right time with well-trained individuals leads to the best outcome.

These CISM Refresher sessions are for CISM practitioners who:

  • Have not (or its been a while since) experienced a specific intervention in the field
  • Want to review current information on proper use of a specific intervention
  • Want updates on new skills, methods and processes
  • Understands that repeated practice of each skill set enhances on site performance

Requesting These Courses:

CISM Refresher: Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

*Prerequisite: Group Crisis Intervention

Critical Incident Stress Debriefings led by at least two trained members of a crisis team, including one mental health professional, follows the specific 7-step intervention designed to assist homogenous groups after exposure to the same critical incident.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this session participants will:

  • Be able to identify the suggested steps of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
  • List 3 common group challenges and strategies for their management
  • Develop enhanced confidence conducting a Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

Certificates and Continuing Education:

General Contact Hours: 

3 Contact Hours; 0.3 General CEUs from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Dept. of Emergency Health Services Professional and Continuing Education (PACE). Based on a formula of 1 Continuing Education Unit for every 10 contact/classroom hours.

ICISF Certificate of Completion:

After the completion of this ICISF course, with verified full attendance, participants are eligible to receive an electronic ICISF Certificate of Completion including General Continuing Education Units. Participants are required to complete a course evaluation prior to receiving this Certificate of Completion.

Completion of ICISF courses and receipt of an ICISF Certificate of Completion does not attest to competence in the field, nor does it provide certification in the field of CISM.

Crisis Management Briefings uniquely fills the factual void. This powerful and versatile crisis intervention tool offered to heterogeneous groups is effective within a wide range of populations, settings and critical incidents.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this session participants will:

  • Be able to describe the phases of a Crisis Management Briefing
  • Identify topics to be addressed in a CMB for a variety of crisis situations
  • Plan a CMB intervention based on a realistic scenario

Using interactive dialogue, this short crisis intervention model for groups impacted by the same event. Goals include stabilization and restoring unit cohesion and performance.

At the completion of this session participants will:

  • Be able to identify the suggested steps of the Defusing 
  • Practice facilitation of a Defusing for a specific crisis scenario 
  • List 3 advance strategies to enhance the effectiveness of Defusing
